How would you like to be part of the fiber-to-the-home movement and have the fastest Internet connection in town? With plenty of bandwidth for all your family's devices, streaming video, and gaming? For only $50/month?
A local company named Greenlight Networks is beginning to deploy super-speed Internet service to homes, using the same fiber-optic technology that provides the backbone of the Internet on which we all depend. The Village of Pittsford is Greenlight's first fiber-connected neighborhood, and we have a chance to make Meadowbrook their next!
Mark Murphy, Managing Partner of Greenlight Networks, came to our last neighborhood association meeting and shared that Meadowbrook is an ideal candidate because our utility infrastructure is above-ground; but we have to meet a critical mass of interested households in order for us to be selected. He answered a lot of our questions, and the following is an overview. We have a direct line to him, so if you have any questions or concerns not addressed here, please let us know and we'll do our best to get you answers.
How Can We Bring Fiber-Connected Internet to Meadowbrook?
Installing a fiber-optic network means stringing new cables, and it's more efficient to install in a neighborhood where lots of homeowners are interested in the service. Greenlight is in the process of determining the interest level of various locations around Rochester, so if we'd like them to choose Meadowbrook, we need to let them know we're interested.

Frequently-Asked Questions
How fast is Greenlight's Internet service?
Their standard residential service is up to 100 Megabits per second for downloads and up to 20 Megabits per second for uploads -- that's 10 or 20 times faster than the service most of us have today!
If I express interest in Greenlight's service today, am I under any obligation? ...am I making a commitment? ...will I pay a deposit?
No. It's just a preliminary indication that you may be interested in the service. It's not a commitment and they're not asking for a deposit.
I'm interested in a faster Internet connection and the price seems right, but my current service is part of a bundle. I would have to change my plan and I don't know if I can work out all the details. What should I do?
Please go ahead and express your interest. If it turns out later that the change doesn't make sense for you, no harm done.
Will there be a contract?
No. Greenlight doesn't ask for a long-term commitment.
Do I need a landline to have Greenlight?
No phone line is required.
Will I have to install new lines?
Greenlight will bring the fiber into your basement, then run a data connection to a first-floor location at no additional charge.
Will Greenlight's service work with my existing wireless router?
Yes. Some wireless routers take better advantage than others of Greenlight's ultra-fast speed, but you don't have to change routers if you don't want to.
I use an e-mail address provided by my current Internet provider (Frontier or Time-Warner). Will I have to change my address?
Yes, if you depend on a Frontier or Road Runner address you'll need a new one, but there are lots of alternatives. You can even get a free e-mail account from many services, e.g., Gmail, AOL, Hotmail, or Outlook.com.
I've been to the Greenlight website and entered my contact information to express my interest ...and now I can't wait! When will fiber optic service be available in Meadowbrook?
Once Greenlight decides to offer service in Meadowbrook, the process will take around 90 days. (It takes at least 45 days just to clear all the bureaucratic hurdles, then there's new infrastructure to install at the neighborhood level and finally the connection of individual homes.)
What else can I do to help make this happen?
Talk with your neighbors about fiber-to-the-home. If they'd like a faster Internet connection, ask them to visit the Greenlight website and express their interest, too. The more interest Greenlight sees in Meadowbrook, the higher priority they'll give our neighborhood.
